The South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Trent Rutherford, who passed away on June 4, 2026, at the age of 27. His death has left family, friends, and fellow club members devastated as they remember a young man whose connection to the club and local community spanned many years.
In a message shared with members and supporters, South Maroubra SLSC extended its sincere condolences to respected Life Members Yvette and Grant “Paddles” Rutherford, as well as their extended family. Trent was a beloved son, brother, cousin, nephew, and friend whose passing has created an immense void in the lives of all who knew him.
A former valued member of South Maroubra SLSC, Trent remained closely connected to the club and its members long after his active participation. He was known for his friendly nature, willingness to help others, and strong ties to the surf lifesaving community. Many members fondly remember seeing him at the club in March, where he proudly presented the Bruce Rutherford Memorial Award to the club’s nippers, continuing a family tradition of service and dedication.
The Rutherford family has long been an important part of South Maroubra SLSC, and the loss of Trent has been felt deeply throughout the organization. Tributes from friends and fellow members have highlighted his kindness, loyalty, and the positive impact he had on those around him.

A funeral service to celebrate Trent’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026, in the South Chapel at Eastern Suburbs Crematorium, Military Road, Matraville.
Trent Rutherford will be remembered with great affection, respect, and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
