FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Homestead High School community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 15-year-old Drew Stephen Saddington, who was killed in a devastating multi-vehicle crash while participating in a driver’s education lesson on Interstate 69.
According to investigators, the collision occurred south of the Interstate 469 interchange and involved three semi-trucks and three passenger vehicles. Preliminary findings indicate that a southbound semi-truck was unable to stop in time as traffic slowed or came to a halt ahead. The truck reportedly struck the rear of several vehicles, triggering a chain-reaction crash that involved the driver’s training vehicle in which Drew was riding.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked to assist those involved in the collision. Despite their efforts, Drew suffered fatal injuries. The Allen County Coroner’s Office also confirmed the death of 70-year-old Bradley Dale Maller, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
The tragic loss of a young student has sent shockwaves throughout the Homestead High School community.
